From our locally-sourced menus, the scent of the Highlands from our sustainable, Scottish soap company that greet guests, to the specially selected chocolates made by the local, award-winning chocolatier, the essence of wild Perthshire and coorie living is something that flows throughout the property.
One thing that is sure to embody the personality of a hotel is the artwork. And so, when it came to choosing pieces for Pine Trees, keeping it Scottish was important. As part of our storytelling, we worked with SKAPA Art Consultancy to handpick some local artists to showcase some stunning landscapes to enhance guest’s experience and to remain with our ethos of going back to nature.
Drawing inspiration from the local landscapes of Perthshire and further afield, the pieces encapsulate the beauty of Scottish flora and fauna, skillfully blending various materials and processes to create a sense of being encompassed by nature. Together, they celebrate the serene wilds of Scotland.
There are over 20 Scottish artists featured in the hotel but two are featured more prominently. Andrew Mackenzie and Joan Doerr both have large original works in the main reception areas of the hotel.
Joan Doerr
Joan Doerr is a Scottish abstract painter. Her paintings are created using an instinctual process, consisting of painting, and drawing. Taking inspiration from variety of different sources, often encountered in the everyday. Her work is influenced by the visual effects of natural elements on the environment, with weathering, textures, and atmospheric conditions being central themes. She has spent many hours drawing and observing plant forms at the Botanic Garden, these interpretations frequently make their way into her paintings.
She constructs her work in several layers, often applying and then removing paint to reach the desired finish. Doerr’s multi-layered process is evident in the finished work, the details of her earlier layers visible just beneath the surface.
Andrew MacKenzie
Andrew Mackenzie was born in Banff, northeast Scotland. He is a painter whose work mines a territory between abstraction and representation. His work responds to relationships between landscape and the built environment, focusing often on rivers, reservoirs, tree forms, the edges of fields and car parks, combined with diagrammatic suggestions of manmade structures or open frameworks. These structures are sometimes invented but more often take their starting point from observed buildings or other objects encountered on walks around his home in the Scottish Borders.
Works also highlight areas of natural beauty which is often overlooked and encouraging viewers to notice the simple yet remarkable plants at their feet.
